An evening in a comfortable family home. Here/now.
FRAN is cleaning up after dinner while GEN is finishing a glass of wine.
GEN: You did what??
FRAN: Nothing! Nothing. I just asked a few questions. I didn’t submit paperwork or anything.
GEN: Right. You just asked what it would take to transfer our daughter mid-year to a school where she doesn’t know anybody.
FRAN: She didn’t know anybody at Roseman.
GEN: Public school is a whole different ball game, Fran. I don’t think she’s ready for that / or wants it, for that matter.
FRAN: Ready for what? All I did was ask.
I’m not doing anything without you.
I just wanted to come to you with all the facts in case we wanted to explore the idea further.
GEN: You talked to a high school principal without me.
FRAN: Baby, don’t you think Dee needs to be around more people like her?
GEN: Dee is with some of the brightest, most promising students in the state at Roseman. She fits right in.
FRAN: You know what I mean.
GEN: Other mixed kids go there! That girl Mari - her dad is Korean, and George’s mom is Hispanic, right?
FRAN: They aren’t even in her friend group! Her friends are all so -
They don’t build her up.
GEN: High school is tough. Public or private.
And usually changing schools doesn’t make things easier.
FRAN: I know, but I want to make sure she’s connecting / with other Black kids.
GEN: And you think public school will magically make her have Black friends?
FRAN: She doesn’t have anything in common with these Roseman kids.
GEN: What does she have in common with public school kids? Do you think she’ll just drop her old friends and -
I don’t think we should force her to have Black friends.
FRAN: That’s not -
When I was driving her to school the other day, she said she doesn’t feel like she fits in at Roseman. That’s all.
GEN: It’s her freshman year! She’s still figuring things out.
FRAN: She needs to figure out who she is. I don’t want her to grow up wishing she’s something she’s not
…just to fit in.
GEN: She’ll find her way. And I don’t think this is it.
FRAN: Will you at least think about it?
Upstairs, we hear DEE talking to someone…
